FAQ

How often should i get my chimney swept?

It will depend on a number of factors which include the type of fuel used, the appliance, how
often it gets used and the moisture content of wood fuel. We will be able to advise how often
your chimney should be swept during your appointment. The information below will help
guide you:-

  • Smokeless fuel – At least once a year
  • Coal – Quarterly when in use
  • Wood – Quarterly when in use
  • Oil – Once a year
  • Gas – Once a year.

Do i need a sweep certificate for my home/business insurance?

Yes, almost all do. Hill’s Chimney Sweeping provides a certificate of sweeping accredited by
the ‘National Association of Chimney Sweeps’.

Without evidence of regular sweeping and maintenance, in the event of a claim it is almost
certain your insurance company will not pay!

How long does a sweep take?

Normally within 45 minutes but can sometimes take a little more depending on the appliance
and work required.

Do i need to do anything to prepare for you?

Not really but ideally I ask you to remove any ash from the stove/fireplace and of course i will
need access, normally around 6’ from the fireplace.

Most importantly the stove must be cold i.e not been lit for 24hrs.

Will there be a mess!

Generally speaking no, with modern techniques it’s very rare. We use floor runners and dust
sheets while sealing the front of your stove/fireplace to prevent soot/debris entering your
home. A high powered H rated vacuum is used ensuring your home is kept in a clean and
safe condition.

If we were to find a problem that needs to be resolved i.e. Bird nest removal which can
sometimes create a little mess but you would be made aware beforehand.

What payment methods do you accept?

Currently we are accepting cash and BACS.

Do you have liability insurance?

Of course, Hill’s Chimney Sweeping has full professional and personal liability insurance.

What is NACS?

‘NACS’ stands for National Association of Chimney Sweeps which is the longest serving
trade association for qualified chimney sweeps formed in 1982 promoting high standards for
the sweeping, inspection and maintenance of chimneys.

NACS members work strictly to the NACS code of practice and code of conduct for the
cleaning of chimneys.

The code of practice is printed out on the back of every sweep certificate.
